Super Pop... the Movie?
Hey All. I took a quick stab at throwing this together... not quite perfect, but I will keep cranking on it... wanted to show you all how good you look on camera before the holidays.
Any one else missing the shop, and going to other pop ups just to feel the rush, only to feel let down because none of them have thriller dance offs more than once a day....? -Alex

fixtures wish list
Fixtures is making a list of supplies that we need. If you can contribute anything from
this list or think anything needs to be added, please let Zarouhie know or
drop it by studio #72.
Fixtures supply list:
brackets or hinges, and screws
primer (and maybe white paint)
paint roller covers (I figure that we can borrow rollers, extenders
and pans from school)
plastic drop clots
shims (homemade is fine)
tape for putting boxes together
Gaffers tape - probably black (for extension cords)
holiday lights- white
extension cords
power strips

Retail-stravaganza
Disney’s Retail Plan Is a Theme Park in Its Stores
The Disney board approved the Imagination Park concept on Oct. 1 after touring the prototype and receiving hand-made books from Mr. Fielding that pitched the concept as “the best 30 minutes of a child’s day.” Now Disney is bringing in landlords, trying to pit them against one another to secure top-tier locations and favorable leases.“We will essentially be the only toy retailer left at the mall because everybody else has evaporated,” Mr. Mooney said. Mr. Fielding added, “Every mall in America is desperate for newness and freshness.”

giles miller pop-up shop
This is pulled from designboom.com
during london design week 09, designer giles miller designed and curated a pop-up shop
of his work at 1.12 kingly court. miller has designed a range of cardboard products
and furniture in which he attempts to combine the values of individuality with the realities
of reproduction in his somewhat craft-based production techniques. the way in which
he proceeds with his design allows for personalization, giving individuals the opportunity
to add value to their object, preventing them from losing their worth.
It seems like pop-up shop is quickly becoming a term for thoughtless cardboard furniture. Im pretty sure "craft-based productions techniques" means laser-cut.
We need to think about this as we design our advertising and promotion. How can we set ourselves apart from what this term is becoming?

LA, AMERICANA, GROVE
here are some links to articles that pertain to the reading. this is what i think of when i think of malls. i especially recommend the laweekly article.
i also have been rereading umberto eco's 'travels in hyperreality,' because i think the ersatz nature of the mall and the amusement park environment have so much in common. i don't know whether/how this will manifest in work, but the hyperreality notion is certainly significant.
the grove and the americana are simulacra, in that they strive to emulate an american town that does not and has never existed. as the nytimes article notes: only the money isn't pretend...
i will likely be writing about these spaces for the book.

Mannequins!!!
Mock-up
Here are a couple mockups of the stencil on newsprint.
One long horizontal line of text wrapping around the space could work well. Since the stencils are standard and we don't know the size of the window panes, there may awkward breaks in the text. Consider how the text can be broken up if necessary.

Here is one thought. In the interest of time and availability of materials, i thought we could tape newspapers (or shopping inserts) to the front window and simply paint the sign/announcement. I have some leftover house paints from last year. Obviously the font and message is just to give an idea.
Thoughts? Other ideas?

Night of the Comet
Regina and Samantha set aside their Uzis and try on a dizzying array of designer dresses and fur coats as Cyndi Lauper’s “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” blares in the background. But the fun comes to an end when they’re attacked by zombie employees demanding payment for the items they’ve taken.
